What does a peptide COA verify for research buyers?
A COA summarizes vendor-reported batch analytical results—commonly identity and purity by methods such as HPLC and mass spectrometry.
Pharmacopeial literature describes how regulated industries structure certificate content for release testing; RUO retail materials vary by supplier, so researchers treat each COA as batch-specific documentation to reconcile with an internal quality plan—not as proof that a compound will perform in a particular assay.
What a COA is (and is not)
A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is a batch-level summary—often from the supplier or their contract lab—listing tests performed and reported results (e.g. identity, purity). It is not a universal guarantee of future performance in your assay, and PurePep Vital does not run independent lab tests on products we discuss.
Use a COA as documentation literacy: one input when you compare retailers and align with your lab’s quality plan. For how we compare offers without testing products, see our research peptide deals & vendor comparison pillar.
Typical fields on a peptide COA
Labels vary by lab, but researchers often see:
- Product / catalog / batch ID — ties the document to a specific lot.
- Identity — e.g. mass spectrometry or HPLC pattern consistent with the expected sequence (wording differs by lab).
- Purity — often HPLC area percent; know whether the method resolves your impurities of concern.
- Appearance — e.g. lyophilized powder (not a substitute for full characterization).
- Residual solvents / water / counter-ions — when applicable to the format.
If a field is missing, ask the seller what standard they follow and whether raw data or method summaries are available under your institution’s policy.

Questions to ask before you rely on a COA
- Is this COA for this exact SKU and batch you received?
- Which methods were used (e.g. HPLC, MS), and are they appropriate for your use case?
- How does the vendor handle chain-of-custody and document retention?

Third-party peptide testing (HPLC / MS)
Some workflows send retained samples or reference materials to independent analytical laboratories for HPLC, mass spectrometry, or related assays. Online discussions sometimes reference specialty peptide-analysis services (for example Janoshik); those names describe service providers, not a universal standard.
Treat any third-party report like a vendor COA: confirm the document references the same catalog code and lot, understand which methods were run, and file results under the institution’s QA policy.
PurePep Vital does not commission or interpret lab tests for readers.
Red flags include reports that cannot be tied to a batch, screenshots without methodology, or marketing that substitutes a lab logo for full traceability. For procurement discipline, pair this section with RUO documentation checklist and vendor comparison methodology.
